In a delightful turn of events during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia, renowned commentators Nasser Hussain and Ravi Shastri engaged in lighthearted banter, reviving memories of their infamous on-air exchange from a decade ago. During a flashback segment on Day 1, where iconic Test match scorecards were showcased, the scorecard of the thrilling tied Test between India and Australia in Chennai in 1986 appeared on the screen.
Nasser Hussain provokes Ravi Shastri
As the scorecard emerged, Hussain, Shastri, and Justin, the trio in the commentary box, couldn’t resist delving into the historic encounter. Hussain, with a playful jibe, turned to Shastri and asked him to share his recollections of the Test match, considering his participation in it.
“We are looking back at some of the greatest Tests of all time. Ravi Shastri featured in this one. So, we must be going back a while. 1986 Chennai second-ever tied Test. What do you remember of that Test Ravi?” Hussain quipped during the commentary.
Quick-witted as ever, Shastri joined in the banter, remarking, “The whole of India will remember what you’ve said just now. Goes back a long time. There’s Nass going at Rav again, never mind,” prompting laughter from Hussain.

The friendly exchange stood in stark contrast to their heated verbal clash during the 2011 India vs. England Test series. Back then, Hussain had criticized India’s decision not to opt for the Decision Review System (DRS) throughout the series, leading to a fiery response from Shastri, who defended the team’s stance and called out Hussain on various fronts.
However, during the WTC final, the two veteran cricketers showcased their camaraderie, reflecting a positive and amicable relationship, as they reminisced about the memorable tied Test match of 1986. Shastri vividly recounted the thrilling encounter, highlighting Australia’s bold declaration, India’s spirited chase, and Dean Jones’ monumental innings that almost claimed his life due to dehydration.
