From Shadow of Greatness to Finding His Own: Heinrich Klaasen’s IPL Success After Early Struggles

South African wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen has been a revelation for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024. His aggressive batting, with 413 runs at a strike rate of over 180, has been instrumental in propelling SRH to the Qualifier 2 stage. However, Klaasen’s journey to this point hasn’t been without its challenges.

Early Career Struggles: The Burden of Comparisons

Speaking to Cricbuzz ahead of the crucial Qualifier 2 clash against Rajasthan Royals, Klaasen revealed how early comparisons to the legendary AB de Villiers impacted his game. “I’ve definitely matured a lot,” he admitted.

He elaborated on the pressure of living up to such a high standard. “Back then it was almost like I had to show off all my skills… I was compared to a guy who can play 360 degrees [AB de Villiers]. So I wanted to show all the shots that I had which messed with my mind quite a bit.”

Rediscovering Himself: Moving Beyond Imitation

These comparisons led to a dip in form and even Klaasen’s omission from the South African national team. However, this setback proved to be a turning point. “Through learning and my experiences, through the years, I’ve been dropped and my game was in such terrible shape that I really had to go rediscover who the real Heinrich Klaasen was,” he explained. The focus shifted from emulating de Villiers to rediscovering his own strengths.

This newfound maturity is a key factor in Klaasen’s current success. “Where I am sitting right now, it is a lot simpler,” he stated. He has developed a more adaptable approach, relying on a core skillset with the ability to switch gears when needed. “It’s the maturity,” he emphasized.

Respect for De Villiers’ Genius

While the comparisons were initially detrimental, Klaasen holds AB de Villiers in high regard. He acknowledged attempting to mimic de Villiers’ shot selection for sixes, but ultimately realized it wasn’t a good fit. “He’s a freak of nature in my eyes,” Klaasen said about de Villiers.

He highlighted de Villiers’ exceptional ability to read the bowlers, a skill he considers unteachable. “His genius… is that he can know exactly where the bowler will bowl about 70-80% of the time,” Klaasen concluded.
