Sanju Samson’s dream of participating in the World Cup has finally become a reality after a decade of perseverance. This selection, however, comes with high expectations, according to former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir.
Samson’s path to the World Cup has been paved with both brilliance and inconsistency. After years of disappointment and struggles with consistency, his outstanding performance in the IPL and his recent ODI century against South Africa have finally paid off. With Rishabh Pant recovering from injury and Ishan Kishan missing out on selection, the door opened for Samson to claim the backup wicketkeeper spot.
The upcoming T20 World Cup presents a crucial opportunity for Samson. A string of poor performances could potentially jeopardize his future prospects in international cricket. However, a stellar performance has the potential to propel him to international stardom. This is the sentiment echoed by Gambhir, who believes this is Samson’s time to shine.
Gambhir, who was Samson’s teammate during his early IPL days with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, emphasizes the importance of capitalizing on this opportunity. “Now that you’ve gotten picked in the World Cup team, you have that opportunity—the kind that you need to make sure you start winning games for India if you get the chance,” Gambhir remarked in a recent interview with SportsKeeda. He highlights Samson’s experience in international cricket, urging him to leverage this experience and maturity to perform at the highest level.
Gambhir further suggests that Samson’s leadership role as captain of the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024 has positively impacted his batting. Despite a recent slump by the Royals, Samson’s contributions were instrumental in their playoff run. He currently sits at number six on the Orange Cap list, showcasing his consistent form with over 500 runs scored in 13 matches.
Gambhir reminisced about his time as captain of the KKR team that won the IPL in 2012, a team that included a young, uncapped Samson. While Samson didn’t see any playing time that season, Gambhir recognized his talent immediately. “Just the quality of a player,” Gambhir stated. “I don’t need to see much. Five minutes are enough to figure out what kind of a player he is.”
Gambhir acknowledges the growth and development Samson has displayed over the years, both mentally and in terms of skillset. He emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement, highlighting Samson’s dedication to fitness, power-hitting, wicketkeeping, and captaincy. Gambhir believes that the experience gained through captaincy has enhanced Samson’s ability to analyze situations and read the game better, ultimately leading to improved batting performances.
With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, all eyes are on Sanju Samson. Will he rise to the occasion and solidify his place in the Indian cricket team, or will the pressure prove too much? Gambhir’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the stakes involved and the immense potential Samson possesses.
