The Indian cricket team’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 has brought back an old tweet from Suryakumar Yadav into the spotlight. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, secured a memorable win against South Africa in the final. As part of their celebrations, the team met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on Thursday.
During this meeting, Suryakumar Yadav’s tweet from 2017 re-emerged, where he thanked PM Modi for the Swachh Bharat initiative and expressed a desire to take a selfie with the Prime Minister someday. He had tweeted, “Thank you sir @narendramodi Ji for this step. Very happy to be a part of @swachhbharat . May b a selfie someday in real if I get lucky. Haha,” alongside a picture with a poster of PM Modi.
The Indian cricket team arrived in New Delhi early in the morning after being delayed in Barbados due to bad weather. At the Prime Minister’s residence, they had an engaging discussion with PM Modi. To commemorate the occasion, BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah presented a special ‘NAMO’ India jersey to the Prime Minister.
Following the meeting, the BCCI posted on X (formerly Twitter), “The triumphant Indian Cricket Team met with the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji, at his official residence today upon arrival. Sir, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your inspiring words and the invaluable support you have provided to #TeamIndia.”
After their visit with PM Modi, the team traveled to Mumbai for a victory parade from Nariman Point to Wankhede Stadium. There, they participated in a felicitation ceremony. BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who attended the final in Barbados, will distribute a Rs 125 crore cash prize to the team in recognition of their first ICC trophy win in over a decade.
While the celebrations were joyous, they were also marked by a bittersweet note as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20I cricket following the victory. Despite this, the team’s success and their meeting with the Prime Minister have been monumental moments for Indian cricket.
