In an important update ahead of IPL 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formalized detailed rules regarding the conduct of Super Overs, introducing specific time limits and procedures to streamline tied matches. These new guidelines were shared with the franchises after the recent Captains’ Meet and aim to ensure smooth handling of matches that extend into multiple Super Overs.

One-Hour Cap for Super Overs

While IPL history hasn’t seen a Super Over since 2021, the BCCI has now clarified how long teams can continue playing Super Overs in case of repeated ties. According to the new policy, Super Overs can continue until a result is achieved but must be concluded within one hour after the end of the main match.

The first Super Over must commence within 10 minutes of the match’s completion. If further Super Overs are required, there should be only a five-minute interval between each.

However, if the match referee senses that the one-hour limit is close to being breached, he will inform the captains in advance regarding the final Super Over. This is a crucial step to avoid excessively prolonging matches.

Additionally, one unsuccessful DRS review will be allowed per team in each Super Over.

Key Super Over Rules Defined by BCCI

The BCCI also laid out comprehensive conditions under which Super Overs are to be conducted:

  • Each team plays one over of six balls; the team with the higher score wins.
  • Loss of two wickets ends the team’s Super Over innings.
  • Super Overs continue indefinitely until a winner emerges (unless abandoned).
  • The team batting second in the main match will bat first in the Super Over.
  • Same fielding restrictions apply as the final over of a regular T20 innings.
  • One unsuccessful review is allowed per team in every Super Over.
  • The same pitch will be used unless deemed unsuitable by officials.
  • Nominated players, including concussion substitutes, are eligible.
  • Players serving penalty time during the main match will carry it into the Super Over.
  • Batters dismissed in one Super Over cannot bat in subsequent ones; similarly, bowlers used in a Super Over cannot bowl in the next.
  • Teams switch batting order and bowling ends in every new Super Over.

What Happens if the Super Over Cannot Be Completed?

The BCCI addressed situations where weather or unforeseen interruptions prevent Super Overs from being completed. If the Super Over (or any subsequent ones) cannot be concluded, the match will be declared a tie and points will be shared between the teams, as per standard IPL regulations.
