The BCCI is actively considering expanding the IPL season to 94 matches from 2028, but there are no plans to introduce new franchises in the near future.
The league had expanded to its current 74-match format in 2022 after the addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. Initial proposals to grow to 84 matches for 2025 were shelved due to a scheduling crunch and broadcaster concerns over too many double-headers. However, expansion remains a possibility for the future.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told ESPNcricinfo that the BCCI will seriously consider moving to a full home-and-away format for the next media-rights cycle starting in 2028.
“Definitely, that might be an opportunity,” Dhumal said. “Given the shifting interests of fans toward franchise and T20 cricket, we’ll have to think more seriously about how to create maximum value for all stakeholders.”
He noted that while immediate expansion isn’t feasible due to current commitments to bilateral cricket and ICC events, the evolving cricket calendar could allow a shift to a 94-match season in the medium term.
Although some investors have shown interest in new teams, Dhumal clarified that there are no plans to increase the number of franchises.
“Ten is a good number for now,” he said. “Our main focus is on maintaining the quality of cricket. Expansion might be discussed in the future, but not in the short term.”
Franchise officials have privately supported a 94-match format, but broadcasters’ concerns about viewer fatigue will play a key role. The 2025 IPL season will stretch across nine weeks with 12 double-headers, and further expansion would require an extended international window.
Dhumal praised the competitive spirit of IPL 2025, highlighting the strong performances of teams like Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants.
“Every year, the tournament has grown stronger. It would be great to see a new winner lift the trophy this season,” he said, emphasizing the rise of young Indian talent as a major positive.
