Virat Kohli believes players are forgetting the importance of building partnerships and taking games deep in T20 cricket. After leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to another successful chase, Kohli spoke about how crucial it is to rotate strike and avoid letting the game stagnate.

RCB faced a tough challenge against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday night. Chasing a target of 163, they lost three wickets early and were reduced to 26 for 3 after just four overs. Kohli stayed calm and focused on rebuilding the innings. He stitched a crucial 119-run partnership with Krunal Pandya, which guided RCB to a comfortable victory.

Kohli’s Focus on Strike Rotation and Partnerships

Kohli said that in T20s, it is vital to read the situation carefully. He explained that he always checks the conditions, the total on the board, and which bowlers are due to bowl. His main aim during a chase is to keep the singles and doubles flowing and find boundaries when possible.

“People are forgetting how important it is to stitch partnerships and take the game deep,” Kohli said after the match. He added that it is not easy to start hitting from ball one, especially on slower pitches. Kohli believes that rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard moving are key skills that every batter must develop.

Kohli scored 51 runs off 47 balls before falling to Dushmantha Chameera while trying to hit a six. Krunal Pandya, who was promoted up the order, scored a quick 73 off 47 balls. Their partnership was the backbone of RCB’s win and kept the chase under control despite the early loss of wickets.

Kohli also mentioned that he constantly checks with the dugout during a chase to understand if they are on course and what role he needs to play. He praised the team’s comeback, saying, “It was a top win. We were under pressure at 26 for 3, but the partnership with Krunal made the difference.”

This season, Kohli has been outstanding during run-chases. He has scored half-centuries in all four of RCB’s successful chases. So far, he has made 443 runs in 10 matches and is the leading run-scorer of IPL 2025.
