Jasprit Bumrah, a seasoned death-bowling specialist, has a treasure trove of memorable spells throughout his career. However, one particular over stands out: the nail-biting Super Over in the 2017 IPL encounter between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Lions (GL).
The Stage is Set: Bumrah vs. McCullum
With both teams tied at a modest score of 153, the match went down to the wire. Captain Rohit Sharma entrusted Bumrah, then a rising star, with the crucial Super Over instead of the experienced Lasith Malinga. MI set a target of 11 runs, seemingly an easy feat for the explosive batting duo of Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch.
However, Bumrah defied expectations. Despite a shaky start with a no-ball and a wide, he held his nerve. Recalling the pressure-packed moment, Bumrah, in a video posted by Jio Cinema, spoke to his wife and sports broadcaster Sanjana Ganesan. “The ball was reverse-swinging,” he explained. “We thought my yorkers, especially the slower dipping yorker I had just developed, could be effective.”
Bumrah elaborated on maintaining his composure despite the initial hiccups. “The start wasn’t ideal,” he admitted, “but I didn’t panic. I felt confident that if I executed my deliveries precisely, they wouldn’t be able to score big.” His confidence proved justified. “Midway through the over, McCullum even admitted to me that I was bowling well and he couldn’t hit me,” Bumrah revealed.
A Turning Point in Bumrah’s Career
By 2017, Bumrah had already established himself as a vital member of the Indian national team, having debuted in 2016. This IPL season, however, marked a significant leap forward. He picked up 20 wickets, a substantial improvement from his previous seasons’ tallies (15 in 2016 and a combined 11 before that).
While Bumrah has delivered numerous match-defining spells throughout his career, including a crucial performance in the 2019 IPL final against Chennai Super Kings, the Super Over against Gujarat Lions remains a defining moment. Not only did he restrict the opposition to a paltry 6 runs, but he did so by outsmarting one of the most feared batsmen in the world. This feat, along with his impressive bowling performance in the regular overs (2 wickets for 32 runs), cemented his reputation as a reliable death-over specialist and a captain’s go-to bowler.
