Former England captain Kevin Pietersen predicts that India will prepare spin-friendly tracks for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, scheduled to begin on January 25 in Hyderabad. He said, “It’s gonna spin. I actually played in Vizag (Visakhapatnam) the other day. It spun and bounced in a T20 game!” Pietersen referenced the recent Cape Town Test where India defeated South Africa in record time, highlighting India’s dominance on spin-friendly pitches.
Pietersen expressed concerns about England’s spin options, with Jack Leach being the most experienced spinner in the squad with 35 Test matches under his belt. He said, “The question is, can England deliver with the spinners they have? That’s going to be what dictates the series.”
Pietersen noted that the pitches are likely to favor spin, saying, “Given what happened in Cape Town the other week, they won’t be shy in preparing something that spins, and they will say, ‘Let’s see what you’ve got.'”
In addition to discussing pitch conditions, Pietersen emphasized the importance of a strong defensive technique in batting. He said, “If you don’t have a defence, you can’t bat, it’s pretty simple. Getting runs is just going to be a fluke without a defence.” He believes that spending time practicing defensive skills in the nets is crucial for building the confidence to attack effectively. According to him, “The ability to defend gives you the confidence to be able to attack.”
Pietersen concluded by stating, “Defend; play straight lines, don’t plant your front foot; wait for the ball; don’t play just with your hands. If you can do that and you have the wherewithal to be able to commit to a solid defence and trust it, then it allows you to loosen up.”
