Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar went viral a few months back for his ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid’ comment aimed at Rishabh Pant. Now, he has recreated that moment in a show before the match between LSG and PBKS.
Gavaskar was asked a query about LSG tactics before the game. He was asked whether the aggressive approach taken by LSG batters has anything to do with the injuries to their fast bowlers. Gavaskar gave a tongue-in-cheek response.
He said, “I wish you had asked me this question a little while earlier because I spent a little time with Rishabh Pant, and I would have certainly asked him if that was the reason why you guys are playing like that. Maybe he would have responded, stupid, stupid, stupid question.”
The question was regarding the injuries to LSG pacers. Three fast bowlers from the squad had to go to the NCA in Bengaluru before the start of the season. They faced injuries of various kinds. Mohsin Khan was, in fact, ruled out for the season. Sensation from the last season, fast bowler Mayank Yadav, is injured too. It is uncertain whether he’ll be able to play this season. Only Avesh Khan has been able to recover from injury and return to the squad for LSG this year. All-rounder Shardul Thakur was brought into the squad for the same concerns. Thakur has, however, shown his class and has been successful with the ball.
Gavaskar responded to the query after the joking remark. He noted that the LSG batting lineup has players like Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell March, who are naturally aggressive batters. “I think when you look at Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, they’re naturally aggressive players. I think that’s the way they play and that’s so exciting to watch. And then there’s Rishabh Pant also coming down the order. So they really have the batting, and they obviously know that. Look, if they don’t have your sharp-edge bowlers, then you certainly need to put more runs on the board to give your other bowlers that much of a cushion in case they don’t have a good day,” he added.
Gavaskar’s comment from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy went viral as netizens laughed at Gavaskar’s rage a lot. Recognising the virality of the comment, it was turned into an advertisement by a travel agency. The ad featured both Rishabh Pant and Sunil Gavaskar.
