In a unique turn of events at the IPL 2024 auction, Punjab Kings (PBKS) found themselves in an unexpected situation regarding the acquisition of Shashank Singh. The franchise’s owners, Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta, created a brief moment of confusion when they attempted to rectify what appeared to be a mistaken purchase. However, Punjab Kings later clarified that the signing of Shashank Singh was intentional and not an error.
The confusion unfolded when Shashank Singh’s name was called during the accelerated round of the mini-auction. Shashank, who was deemed surplus to requirements and went unsold in the previous edition, attracted the attention of PBKS. However, a mix-up occurred as there were two players named Shashank Singh with the same base price of INR 20 lakh.
A bid was placed for Shashank Singh, but moments after the auctioneer concluded the process, Wadia and Zinta expressed their desire to bid for another player, indicating a potential misunderstanding. Despite efforts to clarify the situation, auctioneer Mallika Sagar noted that the hammer had come down for Shashank Singh (Player No. 237) as well.
In response to speculation and queries about a potential mistake in the auction, Punjab Kings issued a clarification. The franchise stated, “Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success.”
The clarification puts to rest any doubts regarding the intentional nature of Shashank Singh’s acquisition by Punjab Kings. The franchise remains optimistic about the player’s contribution to their success in the upcoming IPL season.
Apart from the unique circumstances surrounding Shashank Singh, the Punjab Kings made significant moves in the IPL 2024 auction. They secured the services of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, who will lead the team in the upcoming season. Notable acquisitions include Harshal Patel, Chris Woakes, Rilee Rossouw, Ashutosh Sharma, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Tanay Thyagarajann, and Prince Choudhary.
The franchise, aiming for a strong performance in the 2024 IPL season, has strategically bolstered its squad with a mix of experience and promising talent.
