Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized the BCCI for not supporting bowlers. Speaking at the AWS AI Conclave 2025 in Bengaluru, Ashwin highlighted the disparity between how batters and bowlers are treated in Indian cricket.

“Batters get cocooned, but bowlers don’t,” Ashwin said. He compared India’s approach to Australia’s, where bowlers are celebrated as match-winners.

Ashwin’s Retirement and IPL Return With Chennai Super Kings

Ashwin retired from international cricket during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He will now play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025. This marks his return to the franchise where he began his career in 2008.

The legendary spinner ended his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, with 537 Test scalps. He also took 156 ODI and 72 T20I wickets.

Bowlers Deserve More Backing

Ashwin pointed out the unfair treatment of bowlers in Indian cricket. He cited the example of Akash Deep, who might not play another Test due to poor performance in Australia.

“You won’t see a batter dropped after failing, but bowlers face this often,” Ashwin said. He believes this mindset prevents India from dominating world cricket.

Australia’s Dominance

Ashwin praised Australia for valuing their bowlers. “They know bowlers win Test matches and tournaments,” he said. He hopes India will adopt a similar approach in the future.

The 37-year-old emphasized the importance of data for bowlers. “When bowlers start using data better, they’ll perform even more effectively,” he added.

Ashwin’s Legacy

Ashwin’s career spanned 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is. He was a key player in India’s success across formats. His ability to adapt and innovate made him one of the greatest spinners of his era.

After retiring, Ashwin has been attending events and sharing insights into Indian cricket. His comments at the AWS AI Conclave have sparked discussions about the treatment of bowlers.
