Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma recalled the franchise’s journey in IPL 2020, a season played entirely under strict COVID-19 protocols. MI lifted their fifth IPL trophy that year, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final at the Dubai International Stadium. Ahead of MI’s second IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans (GT), Rohit shared emotional memories of that challenging yet triumphant campaign.
During an interaction with MI’s media team, Rohit reflected on how difficult it was to leave the team hotel after the conclusion of IPL 2020. The players and staff spent over three months inside the bio-bubble, away from their families, as part of the pandemic-induced restrictions.
“You finish IPL after two months, and when you go back home, you realize you’ve built another family. The bonds we created and the memories we made were priceless. After winning all those trophies, it always felt sad to leave that hotel. In Abu Dhabi, when we won the 2020 IPL, I remember seeing a few people crying.”
The bio-bubble restrictions required players to stay within designated hotel premises. They would interact only with teammates, and avoid any contact with the outside world.
“We were there for three and a half months, in the same hotel, the same team room. It was really hard to leave after building such strong memories together,” Rohit added.
Mumbai Indians are set to take on Gujarat Titans in their second IPL 2025 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. MI lost their opening game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They will be eager to register their first win of the season.
GT holds a slight edge over MI, with a 3-2 head-to-head record in the IPL. Notably, all three of GT’s wins came at their home ground in Ahmedabad. Mumbai Indians are yet to beat Gujarat Titans at this venue. This makes an important clash for Rohit Sharma and his team.
After a disappointing start against CSK, MI will need to regroup and put in a strong performance against GT. The five-time IPL champions have a history of slow starts but often gain momentum as the tournament progresses. With a mix of experienced stars and young talents, MI looks to bounce back in IPL 2025.
The match at Narendra Modi Stadium promises an intense battle as MI seeks to break its losing streak and win.
