The upcoming Duleep Trophy has left many Indian cricket enthusiasts disappointed, particularly due to the absence of senior stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced his opinion, suggesting that the trio could have participated in this domestic tournament, which features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent.
Stats Highlighting Player Availability
In a recent post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Manjrekar shared compelling statistics regarding the playing time of these key players. He noted, “India has played 249 international matches in the last five years. Rohit has played only 59% of those. Virat 61% & Bumrah 34%. I see them as well-rested India players. Could have been selected for the Duleep Trophy.”
These figures indicate that the players have had ample opportunity to participate in domestic cricket, raising questions about the selectors’ decision to exclude them.
While Manjrekar advocates for their inclusion, the selectors likely opted against it due to the impending international fixtures, particularly the Border-Gavaskar Trophy scheduled for November. This strategic decision aims to manage the players’ workloads as they prepare for crucial matches.

Manjrekar’s Call for Participation
Manjrekar’s stance is particularly relevant as both Rohit and Kohli approach the twilight of their careers. Meanwhile, Bumrah, recognized as one of India’s premier bowlers, has faced injury challenges that necessitate careful management of his playing time. Manjrekar believes that their participation in the Duleep Trophy could benefit both the players and the tournament, providing invaluable experience and visibility to the domestic scene.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) previously mandated that players not engaged in national duties should participate in domestic competitions. This policy was expected to enhance the quality of Indian domestic cricket by featuring international stars. However, the absence of these senior players from the Duleep Trophy raises concerns about the effectiveness of this initiative.
India’s next challenge lies in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, set to take place in Chennai and Kanpur. Following this, the team will engage in a three-match T20I series. The Indian squad will also prepare for a home series against New Zealand, followed by a crucial tour to Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.
