Sikandar Raza Makes History with T20I Hat-Trick in World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza scripted history by becoming the first Zimbabwean to achieve a T20 International hat-trick. Raza’s remarkable feat occurred during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023 match against Rwanda. He secured the wickets of Muhammad Nadir, Zappy Bimenyimana, and Emile Rukiriza, contributing significantly to Zimbabwe‘s victory by 144 runs.

Raza’s exceptional performance wasn’t limited to bowling, as he, along with Tadiwanashe Marumani, provided Zimbabwe with a solid start in batting. A notable 44-run contribution from Ryan Burl further bolstered the Chevrons, allowing them to post a formidable total of 215 runs. In the subsequent chase, Rwanda faced difficulties, with Zimbabwe’s Richard Ngarava delivering a sensational performance with the new ball. Raza’s final three wickets sealed the victory, keeping Zimbabwe’s hopes alive for qualification in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The veteran cricketer’s impact resonated beyond international cricket, as he had a noteworthy season in 2022, leading to his retention by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2023. Despite facing challenges early in the season, including scoring 119 runs and taking three wickets in seven matches, the franchise retained Raza, emphasizing their faith in his abilities. Following the retention decision, Raza promptly justified the trust by achieving a historic T20I hat-trick and making valuable contributions with the bat.

Raza’s dual success in international and franchise cricket highlights his versatility and resilience, contributing significantly to Zimbabwe’s qualification aspirations and solidifying his place in the Punjab Kings squad for the upcoming IPL season.
