Virat Kohli, the iconic Indian cricketer, made headlines once again, not for his on-field heroics this time, but for his generous contribution to a noble cause. The gloves he wore during his magnificent 82-run knock against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup last year were auctioned off for approximately ₹3.2 lakh ($5,750) at the Chappell Foundation’s annual charity dinner held on September 13 in Sydney, Australia.
The Chappell Foundation, co-founded by former India coach Greg Chappell and Australian businessman Darshak Mehta, is dedicated to raising funds for homeless young people in Australia. The foundation’s mission is to provide shelter, care, education, training, and ultimately, a brighter future for homeless youth across the country.
Virat Kohli’s act of kindness came after his stunning performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where he played an unforgettable innings. The former Indian captain graciously donated the gloves he wore during that match to the Chappell Foundation, and they quickly became a sought-after item at the charity auction.
The gloves sparked immense interest and enthusiasm at the auction. Harv Kler emerged as the winning bidder, making a generous contribution of $5,750. A release from The Chappell Foundation highlighted the spirited bidding contest among two other Indian-Australian businessmen vying for the prized gloves.
Darshak Mehta, co-founder of The Chappell Foundation, expressed his delight at the success of the Annual Dinner, which has raised more funds than ever before. Since its inception in 2017, the foundation has raised over $5 million for its noble cause.
The annual dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) saw the presence of former Australian cricket legends, including Brett Lee, Michael Bevan, Peter Nevill, Phil Emery, Geoff Lawson, Greg Dyer, Trevor Chappell, and Ian Chappell, coming together to support the cause.
Virat Kohli’s charitable act was inspired by his unforgettable innings during the Super 12 match against Pakistan at the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Kohli stepped up to the crease when India was struggling at 7/1 in pursuit of 160 runs. Despite a shaky start, he partnered with Hardik Pandya to resurrect India’s chances.
In the end, it was Ravichandran Ashwin who scored the winning run, securing a thrilling victory for the Men in Blue. Virat Kohli’s gloves from this remarkable match will forever be cherished, not only for their contribution to charity but also for the unforgettable innings they witnessed.
