Former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis has come to the defence of Pakistan’s cricket captain, Babar Azam, following a controversy over alleged WhatsApp chats that recently surfaced. The messages reveal an exchange involving Babar’s attempts to contact Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Zaka Ashraf, which went unanswered.
Amid the controversy, Waqar Younis took to social media to express his disapproval of the situation. He questioned the purpose behind circulating such messages and implored individuals to appreciate Babar Azam as a valuable asset to Pakistan cricket.
WhatsApp Chat Controversy
The WhatsApp chat shows a message from an unknown sender, inquiring if Babar had attempted to call the PCB Chairman without receiving a response. Babar, identified as ‘Babar Azam New’ in the chat, responded with a denial, stating that he had not made any calls.
Babar Azam is currently in India, leading the Pakistan cricket team in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Under his captaincy, Pakistan achieved two consecutive victories early in the tournament. Notably, they successfully chased down a substantial target against Sri Lanka, marking a World Cup record.
Challenges in the World Cup
Despite their initial success, Pakistan faced four consecutive losses, placing their World Cup campaign at risk. Their upcoming match against Bangladesh on October 31 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens presents a crucial opportunity to regain momentum.
Babar Azam’s individual performance in the World Cup has been noteworthy. He has amassed 207 runs at an average of 34.50, accompanied by a strike rate of 79. He has secured three half-centuries in the tournament, with a top score of 74 against Afghanistan.
