Was Suryakumar Yadav Unhappy with MI’s decision to retire out Tilak Varma

Mumbai’s decision to retire out Tilak Varma invited a few backlashes. Expectedly fans and experts had their points of views on the same. However, the reaction that became was the mini protest by Suryakumar Yadav at Mumbai Indians dugout. The decision clearly did not go well with India’s T20I captain.

Hardik’s take

It is not easy to be Mumbai Indians captain. Hardik Pandya is currently leading the side which has two current national side captains, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Although situations seem to be under control and players seem to have adjusted well to the situation, there are times that create controversies.

During Mumbai’s chase against Lucknow Super Giants yesterday, MI decided to retire Tilak Varma out with just 7 balls left.
The reason cited by Hardik Pandya later was Tilak’s inability to hit big shots during the chase against Lucknow Super Giants yesterday. “I mean, I think that was obvious. We needed some hits and I think he was not getting, as you said.

In cricket, sometimes (there can come) one of those days when you really want to try, but it does not happen. The decision says itself why we did it.”

What made SKY upset?

During MI’s 204-run chase against LSG, Tilak and Suryakumar formed a 66-run partnership of which just 17 off 18 runs were scored by Tilak Varma. After Suryakumar’s dismissal, Mumbai needed 52 off 23 balls. Tilak Varma hit 8 runs off last 5 deliveries faced by him. All these eventually led to MI’s decision of retiring him out. With just one ball left ball the penultimate over, Tilak Varma went out of the ground and Mitchell Santner walked in.

Although Mahela Jayawardene, MI coach later explained that it was his tactical decision for the sake of the team, not everyone supported it even in the team. Suryakumar Yadav, India’s current T20I captain was visible shocked and upset with the decision at the Mumbai dug out. Jayawardene tried to calm him down explaining the rationale behind the decision. However, he was clearly not convinced with it.
