Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have dropped England all-rounder Sam Curran from their playing XI for the IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This is the second consecutive match Curran has missed after featuring in the opening two games of the season.
Adding to the surprise, Jamie Overton—who replaced Curran in the last game—is also not part of the XI today, signaling a major shift in CSK’s approach.
Sam Curran’s poor all-round form played a key role in his exclusion. He scored only 12 runs across two games and conceded 47 runs without taking a wicket. Jamie Overton, who was given a chance in the match against Rajasthan Royals, failed to make an impact and has now also been sidelined.
In place of the two overseas all-rounders, CSK have included Mukesh Choudhary and added more batting depth with Devon Conway back at the top. The team seems to be banking on Indian pacers and spin options to exploit the Chepauk conditions.
Despite being left out of the playing XI, Curran is named among the five substitutes. This means he could still be used as an Impact Player if the situation demands. However, back-to-back omissions suggest he’s likely to remain on the bench unless there’s a drastic shift in strategy.
Curran was bought by CSK for INR 2.40 crore in the 2025 auction, returning to the franchise after two previous seasons in 2020 and 2021. His form, however, has not matched expectations.
CSK: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Dube, Rachin Ravindra, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Khaleel Ahmed, Noor Ahmad, Matheesha Pathirana
Substitutes: Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Sameer Rizvi, Tushar Deshpande, Nishant Sindhu
