West Indies Announce Updated Squad for ICC World Cup Qualifier, Johnson Charles Makes a Comeback

The West Indies Cricket Board has revealed their revised squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup qualifier, scheduled to commence in Zimbabwe on June 18th. In a surprising move, explosive batsman Shimron Hetmyer has been excluded from the team, making way for the inclusion of the in-form opener, Johnson Charles.

Charles added, Hetmyer sidelined

Charles, who played a crucial role in the West Indies’ victory during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2016, had experienced a spell on the sidelines since then. However, his recent impressive performances have earned him a spot in the squad for the prestigious tournament. With 50 One Day Internationals (ODIs) under his belt since his debut in 2012, Charles has amassed 1370 runs at an average of 27.40, including two centuries.

“Charles has been named as the replacement for Gudakesh Motie in the 15-member squad,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) said in a statement.

“(Charles) is experienced at the international level, he will add value to the team for what will be a very important tournament. He also has knowledge of the Zimbabwe conditions having played ODI matches there before, so we see him as the right man for the job at this stage.”, West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes said.

In a surprising move, the West Indies Cricket Board has decided not to include star batter Shimron Hetmyer in the updated squad for the ICC World Cup qualifier. The board has opted to stick with the players who have been tested in recent tours.

While Hetmyer’s exclusion may raise eyebrows among fans and pundits, the board’s decision reflects their confidence in the current group of players and their performances in recent matches. The team management aims to maintain stability and build on the cohesion established during recent tours as they strive to secure a spot in the prestigious ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Shai Hope named captain

The West Indies squad, led by captain Shai Hope and vice-captain Rovman Powell, features a blend of experienced players and promising talents. The team includes the likes of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, and Nicholas Pooran, who have had a good IPL season recently.
