Ashwani hails from Punjab and has represented the state side. He has played for Punjab across formats, including First Class cricket, List A and T20 matches. However, he has limited experience and had played only 10 matches before his IPL debut. The 23-year-old made his first class debut back in 2019.

The left-arm pacer was scouted by the Mumbai Indians. He was noticed for his stellar performance in the Sher E Punjab T20 competition in 2024. He became known for his searing yorkers and bowling at the death overs. Mumbai Indians took notice of his performance, and he was bought by the franchise in the mega-auction before IPL 2025. Mumbai Indians bought him for INR 30 lakh.

Ashwani Kumar, the left-arm fast bowler, has made his debut for the Mumbai Indians. In his debut match, Kumar has picked up 4 wickets. At last, Kumar dismissed one of the most lethal batters in the world, Andre Russell. Russell tried to swing across the line against Ashwani but missed the ball. The ball went on to hit the top of off and middle.
