The fifth Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground started on an emotional note. Australian opener Usman Khawaja wore a black armband as a touching tribute to Melissa, the late wife of former South African cricketer Ashwell Prince. Melissa recently passed away after a battle with cancer, and Khawaja’s gesture was a heartfelt way to honor her memory.
Khawaja’s gesture was a touching reminder of the bonds that cricket weaves across borders, with players supporting each other during personal tragedies.
A Tribute to Melissa Prince
Melissa Prince’s death left the cricketing fraternity in mourning. Ashwell Prince, who represented South Africa in 66 Tests and 52 ODIs, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, accompanied by a moving tribute to his wife.
“It was extremely difficult to have to see you endure as much pain as you did in the last few months of your life. But we choose to remember you in the way that we knew you. A gem, one of the rare types who touched people’s hearts in a special way wherever you went,” Prince wrote.
His words reflected deep grief and love, capturing the profound impact Melissa had on those around her. “We miss you mama and can hardly believe that you’re gone. But you have made an imprint in all of our hearts that can never be erased. Happy New Year my love. Rest in Peace up there, your boys will always love you!”
Khawaja’s Short Stay at the Crease
After India was bowled out for just 185 in their first innings, Usman Khawaja stepped in to open for Australia late on Day 1. But his time at the crease didn’t last long. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah sent down a sharp delivery that caught the edge of Khawaja’s bat, sending him back to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs off 9 balls.
While his batting performance was quiet, Khawaja’s tribute made a louder impact. That black armband said more than runs or wickets ever could.
