BCCI Backs Rohit Sharma as Captain for England Test Series

The BCCI has decided to continue with Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain for the upcoming series against England. Despite his poor form in recent matches, selectors believe in his leadership. His role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win influenced their decision.

Rohit Sharma’s Poor Form in Tests

Rohit struggled in the recent Test series against Australia. He scored only 31 runs in three matches. Due to his poor form, he dropped himself for the final Test in Sydney. Before that, India also lost a Test series against New Zealand. These back-to-back defeats raised questions about his captaincy.

However, selectors have chosen to support him. They feel he still has the ability to lead India in tough conditions.

“Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the India senior team in England despite his modest outings and two Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia,” Source said.

BCCI’s Selection Strategy

The selection committee plans to announce the squad during the final stage of IPL 2025. They want to assess players’ form and fitness before making the final call. The announcement may come just before or after the IPL playoffs.

“There is enough time to announce the squad, mostly ahead of the knockouts or just after those matches. You will then get a clear picture as to which players are available by then,” Source said.

India’s England Tour Schedule

India will begin their 45-day England tour with a five-match Test series. The first Test starts on June 20 at Headingley. India will try to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007.

Some players will prepare by playing for India ‘A’ against England Lions. The first four-day match is scheduled for May 30 in Canterbury. The second match will take place on June 6 in Northampton. These games will help players adjust to English conditions before the main series.

“The first four-day match will be hosted at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury from May 30. The second match is scheduled to begin a week later on June 6 at the County Ground in Northampton,” English Cricket Board said.

Impact of IPL 2025 on Selection

The IPL playoffs are scheduled for May 20, 21, and 23, with the final on May 25. Most Indian players are currently busy with their IPL teams. Selectors will closely monitor their performances before finalizing the Test squad.

India’s Challenge in England

Rohit Sharma faces a big challenge. He must prove his leadership in tough English conditions. A strong performance in this series will silence his critics. On the other hand, another failure may force BCCI to rethink their captaincy plans.
