Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India’s cricket team, believes India should stop playing cricket with Pakistan after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. When asked if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was right to break ties with Pakistan, Ganguly agreed. He said that strict actions are needed and terrorism must not be allowed.
“100 percent, this (breaking ties with Pakistan) should be done. Strict action is necessary. It is no joke that such things happen every year. Terrorism cannot be tolerated,” Ganguly said. He wants the BCCI to take strong action against Pakistan.
India and Pakistan’s cricket relationship has not been good for many years. The last time India played a series in Pakistan was in 2007/08, and the last time they played each other in a series was in 2013. After the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, cricket ties between the two countries started to get worse.
Since then, India has not played against Pakistan in bilateral series. After the 2008 attacks, Pakistani players were also banned from playing in the IPL. Recently, India refused to play in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy because of security issues. The recent terror attack in Pahalgam has made many people say that India should stop playing cricket with Pakistan forever.
Rajeev Shukla, the Vice-President of the BCCI, also shared his opinion. He said that the BCCI would listen to the Indian government. India does not play against Pakistan in bilateral series because of government orders. But Shukla explained that India still plays Pakistan in big tournaments like the World Cup because the International Cricket Council (ICC) is in charge of those events.
“We are with the victims, and we condemn it. Whatever our government says, we will do. We don’t play with Pakistan in a bilateral series because of the government’s stand. And we will not play with Pakistan in bilaterals going forward. But when it comes to the ICC event, we play due to ICC engagement. ICC is also aware of what is happening, they will do it (sic),” said Shukla.
It seems that India will not play cricket with Pakistan in future series unless something changes. The Indian government and BCCI’s decision to stop playing with Pakistan is clear.
