Ravi Shastri, former coach of India, praised four young batters lighting up IPL 2025. He spoke on The ICC Review with Sanjana Ganesan. Shastri admired their fearless style and bold shot-making at a young age.
Shastri noted Chennai Super Kings’ 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre. He said,
“The shots, the three shots this Ayush Mhatre played against the Mumbai Indians the other night in Mumbai…”
Shastri paused, then added,
“The way he took off, unbelievable shots for a 17-year-old, against a star-studded Mumbai Indians line-up to come out and express himself in that fashion caught everyone’s eye.”
He also praised Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made his debut at 14. Shastri said,
“I think the first shot he played, that would have taken everyone’s breath away.”
Shastri urged patience for Suryavanshi. He warned,
“But, he’s young, so I would say just let him play a bit because it’s at that age, there’s bound to be failure as well. It’s how he handles failure.”
Shastri also spoke about Punjab Kings’ openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. He said,
“The two Punjab openers (Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh) as well, they give it a smack.”
Arya scored 254 runs in eight innings at a 201.58 strike rate. He blasted a hundred against CSK. Shastri feels all four can play for India one day. He said they show the right attitude and talent.
Shastri issued a caution for young stars. He said bowlers will test them with new deliveries. Then he warned,
“People will come up with new things. There’ll be lots of short stuff thrown at him. When you tonk someone’s first ball for six, then you show no mercy. Then you don’t care whether he’s 14 years old or 12 years old or 20 years old… The menu is the same that you dish out. So, he’ll have to get used to that and once we see him handling that then you can make a proper judgment.”
Shastri believes IPL offers a perfect stage for young talent. He stressed that success at this level can lead to an India call-up. Fans will watch these four batters closely as the season unfolds.
