The Rajasthan Royals’ nightmare run in IPL 2025 continued on Thursday night as the franchise slumped to its fifth consecutive defeat, this time against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the loss itself drew heavy reactions, it was an off-field moment involving RR CEO Jake Lush McCrum that sparked further chatter among fans.
A video, now viral on social media platform X, showed McCrum walking near the upscale liquor outlet “Tonique” in Bengaluru shortly after RR’s 11-run loss at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The footage, taken by an RCB fan, captured McCrum dressed in white, walking alone as the fan jokingly suggested, “RR CEO is going to drink his pain away.”
Chasing 206, the Royals were off to a flying start thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s blistering 49 off just 19 balls and a brief cameo from 14-year-old debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Dhruv Jurel also fought valiantly with a 34-ball 47, but a middle-over collapse, triggered by Josh Hazlewood‘s four-wicket burst and a crucial double blow from Krunal Pandya, left the Royals stranded at 194/9.
This defeat marked RR’s fifth loss on the trot, equaling their longest-ever losing streak in IPL history — previously recorded in 2009. With just two wins from nine games, they remain rooted at eighth place in the points table.
Earlier in the evening, RCB posted a challenging 205/5, anchored by a 95-run stand between Virat Kohli (70 off 42) and Devdutt Padikkal (50 off 27). Kohli’s latest knock propelled him to second on the Orange Cap leaderboard with 392 runs, trailing only Gujarat Titans’ Sai Sudharsan (417).
The match also saw a heated exchange between Hazlewood and Jaiswal. After dismissing the RR opener, Hazlewood gave him a send-off, prompting Jaiswal to respond with an angry retort before the umpire intervened and issued a warning to RCB skipper Rajat Patidar.
Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his frustration at Rajasthan’s gameplay during the post-match analysis on Star Sports. “With someone like Rahul Dravid as the coach, it was baffling. It was unthinking cricket. They’re playing a different kind of game,” he said bluntly.
With this win, Royal Challengers Bengaluru climbed to third place in the standings with six wins in nine matches. This victory was also their first at home this season, and they remain unbeaten in away fixtures. Faf du Plessis and his side now prepare for their next challenge — an away clash against the high-flying Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium this Sunday.
As the tournament enters its final stretch, Rajasthan Royals face a tough path to redemption. The team not only needs to win its remaining games but also relies on other results to stay in playoff contention. Whether the franchise can regroup and recover remains to be seen — but for now, even the off-field optics aren’t doing them any favours.
