Virender Sehwag Issues Caution to IPL 2025 Sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old batting prodigy, has taken the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by storm with his electrifying performances for Rajasthan Royals. The teenager made an explosive debut by hitting a six off the very first ball he faced in the tournament. His impressive debut was followed by a 16-run knock, including two sixes, in the subsequent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, despite the early promise, Suryavanshi has now received a word of caution from former India cricketer Virender Sehwag.

In a recent interview, Sehwag urged the young sensation not to rest on his laurels after his first few games. While acknowledging Suryavanshi’s talent, Sehwag stressed the importance of consistency and long-term success in the IPL. He advised the youngster to aim for a career that spans decades rather than settle for fleeting moments of fame. Sehwag compared Suryavanshi’s potential to that of Virat Kohli. Kohli has played in every IPL season since 2008 and continues to be a key player for RCB.

“Vaibhav must look at players like Virat Kohli, who started at a young age and has been a mainstay in the IPL for years. Kohli didn’t just play one or two seasons and disappear. If Suryavanshi is happy with his debut and his performance so far, thinking that he’s made it big, then we might not see him next year,” Sehwag cautioned.

Focus on Long-Term IPL Success

Sehwag’s words come at a crucial time for Suryavanshi, who had to wait for eight matches to make his IPL debut in the 2025 season. His first game came after Rajasthan Royals’ captain, Sanju Samson, was sidelined due to a side strain. Despite the wait, the teenager didn’t disappoint, scoring 34 runs off 20 balls, including a colossal six off Shardul Thakur in his debut match against Lucknow Super Giants.

However, in the match against RCB, Suryavanshi’s aggression came under scrutiny. Although he aimed to take on the bowling from the very first ball, he failed to build on his early promise. Sehwag noted that it’s important for young players to find a balance between attacking intent and building innings, emphasizing that playing too recklessly could be detrimental to a player’s long-term career.

“Many players come into the IPL, do well for a match or two, and think they’ve made it big. But it’s not about just one or two matches. It’s about being consistent and working hard to stay relevant for years,” Sehwag explained.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s IPL Journey So Far

Suryavanshi’s IPL journey has been remarkable, especially considering his tender age of 14. In the IPL 2025 mega auction, Rajasthan Royals secured his services for INR 1.10 crore, well above his base price of INR 30 lakh. The teenager became the youngest player to be bought at the auction, signaling his immense potential.

Despite the excitement surrounding his debut, Rajasthan Royals’ season has been far from perfect. The team has struggled, with the Royals suffering five consecutive losses after Suryavanshi’s first match, dropping to the eighth position in the points table. This defeat against RCB further dented their playoff hopes, with Rajasthan Royals now facing an uphill battle to stay in contention for the knockout stages.

A Rising Star to Watch

Sehwag’s cautionary words are certainly a reality check for Suryavanshi. They should also serve as motivation for the young batter to stay grounded and continue honing his skills. The IPL is a tough competition. Only those who can consistently deliver over many seasons can achieve true success. Suryavanshi’s debut performance has shown that he has the flair and natural talent to make a mark. But whether he can continue to perform at the highest level remains to be seen.
