Jasprit Bumrah’s Champions Trophy Selection Hinges on Fitness

Jasprit Bumrah is likely to get included in India’s Champions Trophy squad. He needs to become match-fit by the tournament begins on February 19 as per report. The BCCI will announce India’s squad for the upcoming ICC event today.

Jasprit Bumrah, who was leading India is the Sydney Test, suffered an injury during the match and rushed to hospital for a scan. Reportedly, Bumrah’s injury that prevented him from bowling later is stress related. Although the initial reports did not reveal the same, the discomfort he suffered was due to workload in the BGT. He bowled 151.2 overs in nine innings, taking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

As per an ESPNcricinfo report, the BCCI took advice from medical experts and decided allow Bumrah rest for a minimum of five weeks. After this he will go for another scan to determine the intensity of the injury. Accordingly, his return to action will be decided. Meanwhile, Bumrah denied claims by media reporting complete bed rest for him.

Bumrah’s match fitness to be checked against England

If Bumrah is cleared of any further injury, his match fitness is to be tested in final ODI of the series against England on February 12. So, today the Indian cricket board is likely to name Bumrah in India’s 15-man squad for the coveted ICC event. The deadline to submit the final squads for the tournament in February 11. 

Ahead of the Champions Trophy, India will take on England for a 3-match ODI series scheduled for February 6, 9, and 12. This series will be a good preparation for the upcoming ICC tournament. Moreover, the selectors will get a good chance to review the squad they are going to choose for the Champions Trophy.

India will begin their Champions Trophy campaign with a clash against Bangladesh on February 19. Then they will take on arch rivals Pakistan on February 23 and move to their last group match against New Zealand on March 2. As India refused to travel to Pakistan, they would be playing their matches in Dubai.
