In a funny and totally unexpected moment during the Big Bash League (BBL) game between Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes, David Warner managed to hit himself on the head with his own broken bat. Yep, you read that right. The bizarre incident had everyone cracking up, including the commentators, during the fourth over of the Thunder’s innings at the Bellerive Oval on Friday.
The Strange Incident: Bat Breaks, Warner Takes a Blow
It all happened when Warner, the Thunder’s skipper, went for an aggressive drive off a full-length delivery from Hurricanes pacer Riley Meredith. As he mistimed the shot to mid-off, the bat snapped from the handle. The momentum of his swing sent the broken piece flying back, hitting Warner on the helmet.

The commentators couldn’t stop laughing, joking that Warner might need a concussion test after smacking himself. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt and swapped his bat before getting back to business.
Warner’s Blazing Knock
Despite the bizarre start, Warner was in no mood to slow down. The veteran opener went on to smash an unbeaten 88 off 66 balls, guiding Sydney Thunder to a total of 164 for 6. His innings was packed with classic Warner strokes, and he held the fort even as wickets tumbled around him.
Currently, Warner is the leading run-scorer in this BBL season, having amassed 316 runs in just seven innings. His form has been one of the few bright spots for the Thunder this season.
Support from Sam Billings, but Others Struggle
Warner did get a bit of help from Sam Billings, who scored a handy 28. The duo added 34 crucial runs after Thunder lost two quick wickets. But beyond that, the rest of the lineup failed to make any impact. Ollie Davies and Sam Konstas couldn’t hang around for long, leaving Warner to carry the load.
Chasing 165, Hobart Hurricanes cruised to victory. Tim David stole the show with a smashing 68 off 38 balls, taking his team home with 19 balls to spare. The win pushed the Hurricanes to the top of the BBL points table, while the Thunder were left scratching their heads.
