Sydney Thunder’s transformation from last season’s wooden spoon holders to Big Bash League finalists is nothing short of remarkable. At the heart of this turnaround is David Warner, whose passion and energy have breathed new life into the franchise.
Last year, Thunder managed only one win in a dismal campaign. This year, they stand one win away from lifting the trophy. On Monday night, they will face Hobart Hurricanes for a shot at the championship.

Warner’s return to full-time Big Bash action has been a game-changer for Thunder. Cricket Australia’s decision to overturn his leadership ban allowed the 38-year-old to captain the side. And he’s delivered, both as a tactician and a batter.
He has been the league’s top scorer this season, amassing 357 runs, and has led with unmatched enthusiasm. “He’s still the best player in the tournament by a country mile,” said teammate Sam Billings, adding, “His energy is infectious. He makes everyone feel taller on the field.”
This season wasn’t just about Warner. Contributions from players like Sam Billings, who played a match-winning knock in the Challenger final, and smart roster moves by new general manager Trent Copeland also played a role.
But Warner’s impact has been undeniable. From inspiring youngsters like Jason Sangha to leading with an aggressive mindset, Warner has set the tone. “He encourages everyone to be brave and back themselves,” Sangha said.
Warner’s leadership isn’t just about runs or pep talks. His teammates believe that he is tactically very smart. “He’s tactically very smart. He takes risks, and it rubs off on the group,” Sangha added.
Warner has led by example during an injury-hit season by rallying the squad through consecutive knockout wins.
Thunder will now look to cap off their fairy-tale season with a win in the final. For Warner, this season has been about redemption, not just for the team but for himself as well.
