Kevin Pietersen, former England captain has been appointed as the mentor of Delhi Capitals for the upcoming IPL 2025. He will join Hemang Badani (head coach), Matthew Mott (assistant coach), Munaf Patel (bowling coach) and Venugopal Rao (director of cricket) in the Delhi Capitals coaching unit.
Delhi Capitals made the announcement on their app but did not name the captain for the upcoming season yet. Pietersen who last played the Indian Premier League in 2016, said, “It’s an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals.” He also said in a press release, “And I’m really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize.”
This will be Pietersen’s first coaching assignment in the IPL. As a played he participated in the IPL and played for three franchises for five seasons from 2009. He also played for Delhi and captained the side in 2014 after leading Royal Challengers Bangalore for a few games in 2009. Sadly, Delhi ended at the bottom of the table that season with two wins in 14 matches.Pietersen also captained England in 15 international matches including a two-match Test series in India in 2008.
Speaking of his previous experience with Delhi, Pietersen mentioned, “I’ve got incredible memories of representing the Delhi franchise in the IPL, and I’ve been able to maintain that passion for the team even as a broadcaster over the years. I shared the field with Venu (Venugopal Rao) during the 2012 season, and it’s great to be reconnecting with him as we begin a new chapter at this amazing franchise.”
Recently Badani, Rao, and Munaf coached Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 and helped them win the first trophy by a Capitals side in men’s or women’s tournaments anywhere in the world. Delhi Capitals who have reached the final of the IPL only once since the inception of the league, finished sixth in the IPL 2024. After adding a bunch of big names to the squad and winning a trophy in ILT20, the franchise will look up to Kevin Pietersen’s contribution to the set up.
