GT Director Stands by Mohit Sharma Despite Poor Form Ahead of IPL 2024 Clash

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated clash between the Gujarat Titans and the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans’ Director of Cricket, Vikram Solanki, has thrown his weight behind right-arm seamer Mohit Sharma, despite his lackluster performance in the current season of the cash-rich league.

“Sometimes, definitely, as a bowler, batters are just fearless at the moment and you see up the order how some batters just take it on and the time when Mohit is bowling,” Solanki said in a pre-match press conference. “Sometimes he’s bowling some tough overs and the wickets are so placid at the moment, that people are just hitting through the line but we back Mohit he’s a world-class bowler and he’s a phenomenally hardworking cricketer and we believe in him.”

Sharma, who had a stellar outing in the 2023 IPL season, finishing as the joint second-highest wicket-taker with 27 wickets from 14 innings at an average of 13.37 and an economy of 8.17, has struggled to replicate his form this year. In IPL 2024 so far, Sharma has only managed to pick up ten wickets at an average of 36.20 and an economy of 10.96.

The right-arm seamer faced a particularly tough outing in a recent match against the Delhi Capitals, where he conceded 73 runs, the worst figures in IPL history, in his four overs. Despite this, Solanki expressed his unwavering support for Sharma, labeling him as a world-class bowler and a hard-working cricketer.

“Mohit is somebody who has so much experience and I’m sure you guys all monitored and see how he came back last year,” Solanki added. “We understand Usama and Zaman will be disappointed and they should be as they must be looking ahead to the tours of Ireland and England. They are quality cricketers and have long careers ahead of them. They need to continue to focus on their cricket so that they are available, if required.”

Following a recent loss in the ongoing IPL season, the Gujarat Titans currently sit in seventh place with eight points, having won four out of ten matches.

The Gujarat Titans squad for IPL 2024 includes notable players like Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rashid Khan, and Kane Williamson, among others.
