Jos Buttler has been a consistent performer in the IPL over the years. The batter has scored bulk runs and been a headache for bowling lineups. He has not been up to his standards this season. However, he showed his class against the Delhi Capitals.
The England captain faced his arch-rival, Australian Mitchell Starc, in the clash against the Delhi Capitals. Gujarat Titans were chasing DC’s target of 204 in 20 overs. They were cruising at one point, with Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford looking comfortable and in control of the game.
Axar Patel, the DC captain, decided to use Mitchell Starc in the 14th over to spark things up. The partnership was already in its 7th over and was looking like taking away the game for the hosts. Starc was brought in to break the partnership and provide DC with a breakthrough.
However, what conspired was really different. Starc came on to bowl against Buttler. Starc bowled round the wicket and wanted to maintain a wide yorker plan. However, Buttler creamed a cover drive against Starc to start things.
On the next ball, Starc bowled a similar delivery. This time, Buttler deflected the ball towards the point region. The next ball was almost a repetition of the previous game. On a similar ball, Buttler guided the ball towards the gap between point and short third man.
Starc tried to change things up. He switched his angle and came over the wicket. However, Buttler continued to use the offside against Starc. He pushed a ball towards the mid-off region to score his fourth boundary of the over.
Later, Starc bowled a shorter delivery, which prompted Buttler to play a pull. However, Vipraj Nigam, the DC fielder, made a mess of it and allowed Buttler to score his fifth boundary in the over.
Buttler couldn’t hit the last ball for a boundary because of his cramps. Thus, there was an anti-climactic end to a happening over.
Buttler scored an unbeaten 97 to take his side, GT, to the winning line. They scored 204 runs with 7 wickets in hand and 4 balls to spare.
