Marcus Stoinis, one of PBKS’ high-profile acquisitions for ₹11 crores, faced intense criticism after a disappointing performance. The match, which took place in Mullanpur, saw PBKS struggle with the bat, ultimately posting just 157/6 in their 20 overs. Stoinis, in particular, received a dramatic and unexpected dismissal, sparking discussions about his form and the team’s dynamics.
Marcus Stoinis came in to bat at No. 7 with the expectation that he would provide a strong finish for PBKS. However, his time at the crease ended quickly. On just the second ball he faced, Stoinis got bowled out by a slow googly from RCB’s Suyash Sharma. The ball beat his inside edge and sent the stumps flying, leaving Stoinis with just one run. His early departure proved to be a crucial blow to PBKS, who were already struggling to build partnerships. This dismissal came at a pivotal moment when PBKS needed stability in the final overs to set a competitive target.
Former cricketer Ambati Rayudu weighed in on Stoinis’ performance, attributing it to potential issues within the PBKS camp. Rayudu noted that Stoinis, with his extensive international experience, should have easily picked the googly but seemed out of sorts. He suggested that Stoinis might feel unsettled due to factors outside of his cricketing performance.
Rayudu also commented on the team’s atmosphere, stating, “Maybe he is really not in the zone. Maybe he is upset with something that is going around in the team, or himself, or his batting position.” He also pointed out that Stoinis’ low batting position could have contributed to the pressure, as he didn’t get a chance to build momentum before facing spinners in the death overs.
Stoinis’ poor form and disappointing performance in the middle overs raised concerns for PBKS, especially given the significant investment in him during the IPL auction. The pressure on the team’s management, led by head coach Ricky Ponting, continues to mount as they struggle to find the right balance and form in IPL 2025.
Stoinis, who PBKS purchased for ₹11 crores after a fierce bidding war, has yet to fully justify his hefty price tag. His struggles in IPL 2025 have raised questions about his ability to perform under pressure. The Australian all-rounder’s inconsistency with the bat has been a point of concern. The team recently benched him for PBKS’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders. Photos that went viral on social media captured a visibly dejected Stoinis receiving the news from coach Ricky Ponting that he would be dropped for the fixture.
Despite these challenges, Stoinis remains a key figure in PBKS’ squad. The team management will hope that he finds his rhythm soon.
