Vaibhav Suryavanshi has suddenly become the talk of the town. With the Rajasthan Royals’ captain, Sanju Samson, out due to an injury in his ribs, the teenager has taken the opportunity to showcase his talent.
Vaibhav celebrated his 14th birthday just 23 days ago. He became the youngest player to ever play in the IPL. The previous record was held by Prayas Ray Barman. Barman made his debut for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019 at the age of 16 years and 157 days. In comparison, Suryavanshi has debuted much earlier. He is just 14 years and 23 days old.
The RR batter showed no sign of hesitation or fear in his debut. He faced international bowlers but spared no one. Facing his first ball, he hit experienced Indian bowler Shardul Thakur for a maximum. Suryavanshi just cleared his front leg, gave himself some room and launched Thakur for a six over mid-off.
The batter did not stop there. He hit the first ball he faced from Avesh Khan for a six too. Avesh bowled a full delivery, but Vaibhav hit the ball straight past the bowler’s head for another maximum. The batter was 13 off 3 at that moment.
The young batter showed that his shots were not flukes and that he belongs at this level. He showed his talent by taking on a variety of bowlers and scoring runs consistently. Playing along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the duo stitched a useful partnership of 85 in less than 9 overs. The partnership gave RR a strong start to the chase.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born on March 27, 2011. This means that he was less than a week old when India lifted the World Cup after a gap of 28 years. When Dhoni hit that iconic six at the Wankhede on April 2, 2011, Vaibhav was an infant. Dhoni still continues to captain his side.
Suryavanshi has played 5 first-class games for Bihar so far. He also scored a 58-ball century for India Under-19 against Australia Under-19. Ahead of IPL 2025, Vaibhav was contracted in the mega auction. RR sealed the deal at INR 1.1 crore.
