Hardik Pandya made his first appearance in IPL 2025 as Mumbai Indians faced Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Returning to the franchise after a controversial IPL 2024 season, where he took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, Pandya faced immense criticism and fan backlash. However, after a successful international season with India, he seems determined to turn things around for MI this year.
During the toss, former West Indies cricketer and broadcaster Ian Bishop asked Hardik whether he felt he was in a better mental space this time around. Pandya’s response was firm and full of confidence.
When Bishop questioned him about his mental and emotional state, Hardik responded assertively. “It’s fantastic. The preparation has been fantastic. All the boys are raring to go. The goal is to be very clear; we want to do well as a group, back each other, and be there for each other as much as possible,” he said.
He further emphasized the importance of team spirit and lifting each other up in challenging moments. “Whenever someone’s down, we are going to lift them up. It has been very clear, and we are in a happy state,” Pandya added, dismissing any concerns about lingering negativity from the previous season.
Pandya did not feature in MI’s opening match of the season against Chennai Super Kings as he was serving a one-match suspension due to a slow over-rate violation from IPL 2024. Although the rule was later removed, his ban remained in effect. His return to the playing XI against Gujarat Titans was eagerly anticipated, and his comments at the toss set the tone for the match.
Winning the toss, Hardik opted to bowl first, a decision that aligned with MI’s strategy of chasing in favorable conditions. Both MI and GT had suffered defeats in their first matches of the season—Mumbai Indians losing to Chennai Super Kings, while Gujarat Titans went down to Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad.
Speaking about the team’s mindset, Hardik was clear that MI had moved past the disappointments of last season. “We are looking forward, not backward. The past is behind us, and this is a new opportunity to play as a team and show what we are capable of,” he stated.
Hardik’s leadership is under the spotlight again, as MI aims to bounce back from their last-place finish in IPL 2024. With a mix of experienced players and young talents, Mumbai Indians will be hoping for a strong campaign under his captaincy. The all-rounder himself is coming off a stellar run in international cricket, playing a key role in India’s T20 World Cup victory in the West Indies and their Champions Trophy triumph earlier this month.
Despite the criticisms and challenges he faced last season, Hardik Pandya seems determined to make a fresh start. His composed response at the toss indicated that he has put the past behind him and is focused on delivering results. However, the true test lies in his performances on the field and how well he manages the pressure of leading a franchise like Mumbai Indians.
With MI aiming for redemption, Pandya’s leadership and individual performances will be crucial in shaping their IPL 2025 campaign.
