Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Nathan Ellis has been left out of the playing XI for their much-anticipated clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Match 8 of IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The Australian fast bowler featured in CSK’s opening match against Mumbai Indians but has now made way for Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana.
Nathan Ellis had a mixed performance in CSK’s first match of the season against Mumbai Indians. Although he picked up one wicket, he was relatively expensive, conceding 38 runs in his four-over spell. While the rest of CSK’s bowling attack kept things tight, Ellis struggled to find his rhythm on the slow Chepauk surface.
Pathirana, who missed the first match due to a minor injury, has now recovered and replaced Ellis in the starting XI. Given Pathirana’s impressive track record as CSK’s designated death-over specialist, the team management decided to bring him back at the first available opportunity.
At the toss, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed the swap, stating that Pathirana’s return strengthens the team’s bowling attack.
“We are going to bowl first. I think it will play slightly better than the last game. So far, there hasn’t been any dew, and we don’t know when it will arrive. There are areas where we need to improve, especially in the field. We have just one change—Pathirana comes in for Ellis,” Gaikwad said.
This decision highlights CSK’s strategy of optimizing their overseas slots based on conditions and opposition. While Ellis is known for his variations and change of pace, CSK needed a bowler with express pace and toe-crushing yorkers for their home conditions.
Pathirana has been one of CSK’s most dependable fast bowlers over the past few seasons. His ability to deliver pinpoint yorkers at high speeds, especially in death overs, makes him a crucial asset for the team.
The Chennai pitch is known to assist spinners and bowlers who can generate sharp bounce. While Ellis relies more on slower deliveries and cutters, Pathirana’s raw pace provides an attacking option that complements CSK’s bowling unit.
Ellis failed to make a strong impact against Mumbai Indians, where he leaked runs at an economy rate of 9.5. With a strong bowling lineup featuring Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin, CSK opted for a more aggressive pace option in Pathirana.
Despite being dropped for this match, Ellis remains a valuable backup option for CSK. With a long tournament ahead, he could still get opportunities depending on pitch conditions, opposition matchups, or workload management of key players.
For now, CSK have decided to back Pathirana, hoping he can deliver his trademark fiery spells and help them secure another crucial win.
