Michael Vaughan Slams India’s Batting During Second T20I Against England

India narrowly defeated England by two wickets in the second T20I at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. The match saw Tilak Varma emerge as the standout performer with an unbeaten 72 off 55 balls. The southpaw kept his nerves to guide India to a finish. Despite the win, former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized India’s overall batting approach.

A Tale of Missed Opportunities and Heroics

Chasing a modest target of 166, India’s innings was marked by poor shot selection from several batters. The team kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with only Varma showing composure. Vaughan, speaking on Cricbuzz, did not hold back his criticism of India’s batting effort.

“He’s [Varma] a wonderful player. He picked the right ball to attack and held his nerve. To be honest, I don’t think India will bat any worse than they did today,” Vaughan remarked.

India’s powerplay was a mixed bag. They scored 59 runs but lost three wickets. Before the end of the 10th over, half of the Indian team was back in the dugout. England looked to put the pressure back on India. However, Washington Sundar and Tilak Varma made sure India stayed on top. The duo added 38 runs for the 6th wicket before Sundar was removed by Brydon Carse.

Zaheer Khan Applauds Varma’s Maturity

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan echoed Vaughan’s sentiments about Varma’s exceptional performance.

“Tilak Varma showed superb understanding of the situation. Losing early wickets in the powerplay is tough, but he adapted brilliantly. Changing gears when needed and playing with such maturity at 22 is incredible,” said Zaheer.

Tilak Varma now has 707 runs in 22 T20 Internationals. The left-handed batter has three fifties and two hundreds to his name.

England Let the Game Slip

England captain Jos Buttler and his team had their chances but failed to capitalize. Vaughan expressed his disappointment with England’s inability to seize critical moments.

“India gave them chances. They weren’t as sharp as in the first game. England just didn’t take the opportunities handed to them,” Vaughan added.
