Indian cricket fans can rejoice as premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami inches closer to a return. After undergoing surgery for an Achilles tendon injury in February, Shami is reportedly on track for a comeback during the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh in September.
Shami’s last international outing came during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Despite battling discomfort in his ankle, he displayed remarkable dedication, playing through pain and emerging as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with an impressive 24 scalps. However, the injury proved more serious than initially anticipated, necessitating surgery and a period of rehabilitation.
Following consultations with BCCI specialists, Shami underwent surgery and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) under the watchful eye of Dr. Nitin Patel (Head of Sports Science and Medicine) and Strength & Conditioning coach Rajinikanth. Reports indicate Shami has been diligently working on his fitness, including bowling drills at the nets. While not operating at full capacity yet, he’s reportedly bowling pain-free, suggesting a full recovery is imminent.
The two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting from September 19th in Chennai, presents Shami with a golden opportunity to regain match fitness and rhythm. This series will serve as a crucial stepping stone for the upcoming marquee tour of Australia, where the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy awaits. Shami’s presence will undoubtedly bolster India’s bowling attack Down Under.
Shami’s injury forced him to miss several crucial assignments for India, including the Test series against South Africa and England in late 2023 and early 2024. He also sat out the entire IPL 2024 season and the ongoing T20 World Cup. With a potential return against Bangladesh, Shami will be keen to make up for lost time and prove his value to the national team once again.
Shami’s rehabilitation program at the NCA involves a comprehensive approach. He’s reportedly focusing on core activation exercises, strength building, and compound movements to regain peak physical condition and bowling fitness.
Shami’s return to the Indian bowling attack will be a welcome sight for fans and management alike. His experience and swing bowling prowess will be invaluable assets for India, particularly in the upcoming challenges against Australia.
