Mumbai Indians (MI) will continue to miss the services of their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for at least two more games in IPL 2025. The ace fast bowler has been ruled out of MI’s fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 4 and is also doubtful for their upcoming clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
Bumrah, who has been undergoing rehabilitation since January due to stress-related discomfort in his lower back, is said to be closing in on a return. According to ESPNcricinfo, he has increased his bowling workload at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is nearing the final round of fitness tests. His return to MI will only be confirmed once he gets clearance from the BCCI medical panel.
Importantly, Bumrah is being cautious with his comeback, considering the long cricketing season ahead. His fitness is vital for India’s high-profile five-Test series in England starting June 28.
In Bumrah’s absence, Mumbai Indians have relied on Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Hardik Pandya to lead their pace attack. They have also introduced exciting Indian talents such as Satyanarayana Raju, Ashwani Kumar, and Vignesh Puthur in the bowling lineup.
MI have had a mixed start to IPL 2025, with one win and two losses from their first three games. The management, including head coach Mahela Jayawardene, acknowledged in March that Bumrah’s unavailability was a major challenge early in the season.
Bumrah had previously missed the 2023 IPL due to back surger. He has played 133 matches in the league, taking 165 wickets — all for MI since his debut in 2013.
