Chennai Super Kings‘ playoff hopes in IPL 2025 took a serious hit after they suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. With six losses in nine games, CSK now find themselves at the bottom of the table, facing the threat of an early exit from the tournament.
Former CSK star Suresh Raina did not hold back after the team’s latest defeat. While analyzing the match on the broadcast, Raina slammed the franchise’s approach at the auction table. He pointed out that CSK entered the auction with a massive purse but failed to secure proven Indian match-winners like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul.
“Mujhe lagta hai kahin na kahin inse auction acha nahi hua hai. Auction mein itne talented players, itne youngsters the. Kaha hai woh players? Aap itna paisa leke jaate ho auction ke liye. Aapne Rishabh Pant ko chhoda, Shreyas Iyer ko chhoda, KL Rahul ko chhoda,” Raina said during the live show.
Raina also highlighted how uncharacteristic it is to see CSK struggle this badly. “CSK team ko kabhi aise nahi dekha struggle karte hue,” he added, pointing out the drastic difference from the team’s consistent performances in previous seasons.
Harbhajan Singh, who also played for CSK in the past, echoed Raina’s frustration. He criticized CSK’s talent identification and questioned the effectiveness of their scouting process. According to Harbhajan, the franchise had the chance to invest in young and experienced Indian players but failed to do so.
“CSK bohot badi team rahi hai. Jab yeh auction main gaye, inke paas option tha unn players ko le sakte the. Yuvaon main bhi waise yuva dikhe nahi jo game-changing wali innings khel sake. Talent pool hunt karne walon ko bhi puchhna chahiye ki kya information di thi jiske chalte yeh players select hue,” Harbhajan stated.
He also pointed out that the lack of impactful young players has hurt CSK’s campaign this year. “Aapne auction mein kis planning ke saath gaye the, yeh sochne wali baat hai,” he added.
Chennai Super Kings must now win all of their remaining five matches to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 25 becomes a virtual do-or-die clash. After that, they will host Punjab Kings on April 30, followed by crucial encounters against Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Unless CSK produce a miracle turnaround, this could become one of their worst seasons in IPL history. The team management now faces immense pressure to reassess both their tactical approach and long-term planning.
