With his latest Player of the Match award in the IPL, Rohit Sharma achieved yet another feat in his career. In the process he went on to surpass Virat Kohli after winning his 20th POTM award in the history of IPL.
Rohit Sharma looked flawless during his unbeaten 45-ball 76-run innings against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. It helped Mumbai win the match and also earn Rohit Sharma the Player of the Match award. It was the 20th time in his IPL career that Rohit claimed the award. In the process he went past Virat Kohli who has 19 Player of the Match awards in IPL.
AB de Villiers is currently topping the chart with 25 Player of the Match awards in the history of IPL. Chris Gayle is the next with 22 awards followed by Rohit Sharma with 20, Virat Kohli with 19, David Warner and Mahendra Singh Dhoni with 18 awards each.
The 45-ball 76* saw Rohit Sharma slamming four boundaries and hitting six maximums. With his first fifty this season, Rohit also helped Mumbai Indians claim a major win by nine wickets against Chennai Super Kings.
While speaking of his initial off form and the comeback, Rohit said, “After being here for a long time, it’s easy to start doubting yourself and start doing different things. It was important for me to practice well, hit the ball well. When you are clear in your mind, things like this can happen.”
He continued, “It has been a while (getting a big score) but if you doubt yourself, you put pressure on yourself. It is important to balance how you want to play. Today I wanted to hit the ball but it was also important to hold the shape and extend the arms.” Rohit also added, “And then if the ball is in the arc, I want to try what I always do. It has not been happening consistently, but I am not going to doubt myself.”
