Former India captain MS Dhoni has spoken about his relationship with Virat Kohli. He shared how their bond evolved over the years, from a senior-junior dynamic to mutual respect and friendship.
Virat Kohli joined the Indian team when Dhoni was the all-format captain. Many current senior players, including Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, also debuted under Dhoni’s leadership. Kohli was Dhoni’s deputy and eventually took over the captaincy. Their bond remained strong despite leadership changes.
During IPL matches between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), cameras often capture their interactions. Fans admire the camaraderie and mutual respect they display on and off the field.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Dhoni recalled Kohli’s determination from the start. He praised Kohli’s drive to score big runs and his commitment to fitness and performance.
“Between me and Virat, right from the start, he was someone who wanted to contribute. He was never happy with a 40 or a 60; he wanted to score a 100 and be not out till the end. So, that hunger was there right from the start,” Dhoni said.
He added that their bond strengthened through numerous conversations about the game. Kohli often sought feedback on how to improve, which helped them understand each other better.
Despite their close friendship, Dhoni acknowledged that the senior-junior relationship never fully disappeared.
“It was more like a captain and a newcomer at that point in time. Once you keep interacting, you become friends. But I still feel you have a line in the middle between a senior and a junior, but we are still friends. We have an amazing companionship now,” Dhoni stated.
Now, both Dhoni and Kohli are no longer captains of their respective IPL franchises. While Kohli continues to shine in international cricket, Dhoni remains a key figure for CSK. His presence in the IPL excites fans, even as speculation about his retirement continues.
Despite leadership shifts and career changes, their bond remains intact, showing the deep-rooted respect they have for each other.
