Former England cricketers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atheron picked up the ‘Fab Four’ batters of current generation in Sky Sports Cricket Podcast. While Hussain chose a Pakistan star, Atheron trusted two promising left-handers.
Hussain named India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and England’s Harry Brook along with Pakistan’s Saim Ayub and Australia’s Travis Head as his favourites. He said, “Saim Ayub’s just had this injury and it is not sure whether he will be fit for the Champions Trophy, but he could be a dynamic player at the top of the order for Pakistan across all formats.” However, Atheron interrupted him saying that Head does not qualify for the discussion due to his age of 31. On the other hand, Atherton chose Yashasvi and Brook as well and then picked up Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra.
Yashasvi scored 1,478 Test runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.74 last year. He amassed 293 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 41.85 and two fifties while he top-scored for India in international cricket last year and was overall second, with 1,771 runs in 23 matches and 37 innings at an average of 52.08, with three tons and 11 fifties.
For Saim Ayub, the ODI journey has been attractive. In nine matches, he has made 515 runs at an average of 64.37, with a strike rate of above 105. Overall in 35 international matches last year, Ayub scored 1,245 runs at an average of 33.00 and in the process he has outdone Babar Azam.
The consistency have been impressive for Kamindu and Ravindra as well. Kamindu scored 1,049 runs in 16 innings at an average of 74.62, a strike rate over 66 across nine Tests in 2024. Meanwhile, he tied with Aussie batter Don Bradman as the second-fastest player to reach 1,000 Test runs in just 13 innings.
Across all of international cricket last year, Ravindra made 1,079 runs at an average of 37.20 in 19 matches and 31 innings, with two centuries and five fifties. In 12 Test matches last year, he scored 984 runs in 12 matches at an average of 42.78, with two centuries and four fifties.
Former New Zealand Martin Crowe termed the coin ‘Fab Four’ back in the early 2010s while he picked up four starts who would dominate world cricket as per him. The names included India batter Virat Kohli, England’s Joe Root, New Zealand‘s Kane Williamson, and Australia‘s Steve Smith.
The aforementioned players are already nearing the end of their careers and therefore a fresh ‘Fab Four’ is being discussed keeping the consistency of the youngsters.
