Punjab Kings (PBKS) find themselves in a precarious position in the IPL. With just two wins in eight games and their captain Shikhar Dhawan sidelined with a shoulder injury, the upcoming clash against in-form Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) presents a significant challenge. However, PBKS spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi is confident his team is up to the task.
Dhawan’s Absence: A Hurdle But Hope Remains
Dhawan’s injury has undoubtedly weakened the PBKS batting line-up. The veteran opener has missed the last three matches after sustaining the injury against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9th. Joshi confirmed Dhawan’s absence for the KKR match but offered a glimmer of hope for his return in the next game against Chennai Super Kings.
“We miss his batting services,” said Joshi. “The good news is he’s on the recovery path and has been batting in the nets. Hopefully, he’ll be fit for the next game.”
Focus on Facing the Challenge
KKR, currently sitting comfortably in second place with five wins from seven games, will be a formidable opponent. Joshi, however, downplayed concerns about their spin attack.
“We are not concerned about KKR’s spin bowling,” he asserted. “Every IPL cricketer presents a challenge, and we need to embrace it. Performance on any given day depends on various factors. We believe we’re prepared for the challenge tomorrow.”
Staying Positive Despite Inconsistent Form
Joshi acknowledged the need to learn from both wins and losses. “This is a short format where a loose ball can bring a wicket, or even the best ball can be dispatched for a six,” he explained. “Mental calmness and proper preparation are key. Focusing on one ball at a time is crucial.”
Despite KKR’s strong home record with only one loss in four games at Eden Gardens, Joshi believes the pressure might be on the home team.
“We go through various training drills to address losing wickets in the middle overs,” he said. “Since we’re playing away again, perhaps the pressure will be on KKR. This might allow us to play freely and score runs.”
Respecting KKR’s Strength While Focusing on Team Performance
Joshi acknowledged KKR’s consistent performance across all three departments – batting, bowling, and fielding. “Any team excelling in all areas deserves respect,” he said. “However, every match presents a new scenario. Home and away conditions play a role, and hopefully, things will fall into place for us tomorrow.”
Joshi concluded by emphasizing the importance of collective team spirit. “We win and lose together,” he stated. “The team takes responsibility for results, good or bad, and moves forward.”
