The fate of the table toppers and the backbenchers at PSL 2025 has been similar. Islamabad United and Multan Sultans have been hit by players leaving for various reasons. United have won all their games so far, while Sultans have lost all.
Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Short was to play for Islamabad United this season. However, he sustained an injury during the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. He joined the squad while still recovering from the injury. As it turned out, he never really recovered from it.
According to a statement from Islamabad United, Short had shown “encouraging signs of recovery” but felt discomfort during training sessions.
Islamabad United worked in collaboration with Cricket Australia’s medical staff to get Short back to full fitness. However, “in the best interest of the player’s long-term fitness and career”, Short has been sent back home. He has been sent to continue rehabilitation after a joint decision between United and Cricket Australia.
A statement released by United read, “Islamabad United remain fully committed to the well-being of all our players and extend our support to Matt during his recovery. We thank him for his professionalism and positive presence in the camp and wish him a swift and complete recovery.”
On the other end of the points table, Multan Sultans have been hit by a player exclusion too. West Indian player Gudakesh Motie has gone back to Guyana “to attend a domestic matter”. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, he has returned to attend to his ill father.
Sultans hope that Motie returns at some point in the tournament. They have, nonetheless, replaced him with Irish all-rounder Curtis Campher. Sultans have lost all three games played so far. Motie didn’t play a single game this season, all of which the Sultans lost.
