Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel Clash During India’s Australia Tour

Tensions reportedly flared between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel during the recently concluded tour of Australia. According to a report from the Times of India, an incident at the ground involving the two coaches has caught the attention of the BCCI, raising concerns over the team’s support staff dynamics.

Gambhir’s Strict Discipline Sparks Tension

The friction reportedly began when Morkel arrived late for a training session in Australia after attending a personal meeting. Known for his no-nonsense approach to discipline, Gambhir didn’t hold back and scolded Morkel at the ground.

A source familiar with the incident told TOI, “Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground. The board has been told that Morkel was a bit reserved during the rest of the tour. It’s up to these two to sort it out for the team to function smoothly.”

The fallout between Gambhir and Morkel has reportedly left the coaching staff’s cohesion in question, with the BCCI closely monitoring the situation to ensure it doesn’t affect the team’s performance.

BCCI Monitoring Support Staff Performance

The BCCI isn’t just focused on the Gambhir-Morkel situation. The board has been evaluating the overall effectiveness of the team’s support staff, gathering feedback from senior players on how well the coaches contribute to the team’s success.

Among those under scrutiny is batting coach Abhishek Nayar. Questions have been raised about his impact on the team’s batting performance, especially after star batter Virat Kohli struggled with repeated dismissals outside the off stump during recent Tests.

“It’s important to have a coach who brings fresh ideas to help players improve. The board has asked the players if Nayar is offering anything new,” the source added.

Concerns Over Assistant Coach Ryan ten Doeschate

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is also under the scanner. The BCCI is reportedly questioning whether his limited international experience is sufficient for guiding India’s top players. The board wants to ensure the coaching staff is capable of providing meaningful inputs to elevate the team’s performance.

In response to these concerns, the BCCI is considering capping the tenure of support staff contracts at two to three years. A source explained, “The board feels loyalty issues creep in after the coaches spend a lot of time with the team. But it has benefited from a side-arm specialist who offers throwdowns.”
