Lucknow Super Giants have announced Rishabh Pant as their captain for IPL 2025. Pant had been released by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. LSG bought the Indian star for a sum of Rs. 27 crores. This made him the most expensive player in IPL history. Today, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka announced Rishabh Pant as the captain of the franchise.
LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka made it clear that the franchise had been determined to get Pant during the auction. “We had set aside Rs. 27 crore just for Rishabh Pant. We were sure about him,” Goenka revealed.

Goenka also praised Pant’s leadership potential, calling him a future legend of the league. “Rishabh isn’t just going to be the best player for LSG but for the IPL as a whole. His passion and connection with players stand out. I see him becoming one of the greatest captains in IPL history, alongside MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma,” Goenka added.
Pant’s move to LSG has been one of the biggest talking points of this IPL season. Punjab Kings (PBKS) were initially favorites to sign him, given their massive Rs. 112 crore budget and Ricky Ponting’s presence in the franchise. However, PBKS chose to go for Shreyas Iyer, bidding Rs. 26.75 crore, which allowed LSG to swoop in and sign Pant.
Reflecting on the auction, Pant admitted he felt relieved. “I had only one worry, and that was Punjab. Their budget was so high it felt unbeatable. When they signed Shreyas, it was a big relief for me. I’m glad to be here at LSG,” he said.
This move marks a new beginning for Pant, who had been with Delhi Capitals (DC) since 2016. While Pant led DC for several seasons, he couldn’t secure an IPL title with them.
Pant is determined to make his mark with LSG, a franchise still chasing its maiden IPL title. “This is a fresh challenge, and I’m excited about what lies ahead. The goal is clear: to win the IPL and create a strong team culture,” he said.
Goenka emphasised the importance of building trust and learning from every game. “You won’t win every match, but what matters is learning and moving forward as a team. With Rishabh as captain, I believe we’re heading in the right direction,” Goenka said.
