Rishabh Pant is reportedly set to take over as captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for IPL 2025. As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, Rishabh Pant will soon be announced as the captain of LSG.
If confirmed, this will mark Pant’s second franchise captaincy stint after leading Delhi Capitals (DC). Pant opted to re-enter the auction after DC’s hesitation to guarantee him the captaincy role. LSG won a fierce bidding war against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and even outbid DC’s right-to-match attempt to secure the wicketkeeper-batter.
Pant, who has been a part of DC since 2016, captained the side from 2021 and was at the helm until IPL 2024, except for the season he missed due to a car accident. Now, it seems he’s set for a fresh start with LSG.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, LSG had parted ways with their captain KL Rahul. There were reports of his fallout with the management. LSG had a disappointing IPL 2024 as they finished 7th in the points table.
Reports suggest LSG’s management wanted a dynamic Indian leader, and Pant ticked all the boxes. His aggressive style and ability to take bold decisions make him a strong choice.
If confirmed, Pant will have a solid team to work with. LSG retained Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Ayush Badoni, Mohsin Khan, and Mayank Yadav before the auction. They’ve also added big names like David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram to their lineup.
Pant’s leadership will be supported by head coach Justin Langer and team mentor Zaheer Khan. The Lucknow Super Giants had other captaincy options in the form of Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram. However, the franchise has apparently decided to go indigeneous.
Nothing is confirmed as of yet. The official announcement is still awaited.
