The 32nd match of the IPL 2024 season between the Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) saw an early twist as GT found themselves struggling at 66-7 in the 12th over. The DC bowlers were on target right from the start, and one of the crucial wickets came from a controversial stumping of Shahrukh Khan by Rishabh Pant.
The incident occurred when Tristan Stubbs delivered a slightly shortish ball from ’round the wicket, pitching it around off. Shahrukh advanced down the track and attempted to work the ball towards the leg side. However, he missed the delivery, and Rishabh Pant behind the stumps also failed to cleanly grab the ball, causing it to slip out of his hand and hit the stumps.
While Shahrukh was clearly out of his crease, there was doubt whether he had broken the stumps with his hand or with the ball. After prolonged deliberations that were inconclusive, the third umpire ruled him out. Although Pant’s gloves did hit the stumps, the bails only dislodged when the ball made contact, leading to Shahrukh Khan’s dismissal for a golden duck.
The controversial stumping sparked debate among fans and experts, with many questioning the validity of the decision. Nevertheless, Shahrukh’s departure left GT in a precarious position, deepening their batting crisis in the match.
